Welcome!
My name is Alice Toohey and I am a death & dying companion in Portland, Maine. I work with individuals, families and communities in the following ways:
As a trained and experienced Death & Dying Companion, I help you to identify the practical, emotional and spiritual choices that align with who you are and what you most value when faced with the end of life. I serve as a companion and advocate for your choices before, during, and after death.
Death & Dying Conversations can help to integrate death into our everyday activities at any stage of life. When we acknowledge our mortality we have an opportunity to explore a deeper connection to life and may find an increased feeling of meaning and purpose. Whether an individual, family, community or organization, I will support you to begin the conversation.
Community-led Funeral Support I support you to choose any kind of funeral you wish, including those in a funeral home, community-led funerals or no funeral at all. A community-led funeral is one that happens outside of a funeral home and where the family or community act as the funeral director. I have experience with the paperwork, body care, communications, and arrangements needed to carry out a community-led funeral.
As a guide for deathtending work; Alice's demeanor is both gentle and strong, clear yet open; she sets a tone for curious inquiry and encourages one to move at your own pace. I sense that Alice has been at this work for quite some time, on her own journey, of which she is transparent in subtle ways that spark one's own reflections. - Candace Peterson-Kahn
The Other Shore is created in Portland, Maine, which was settled on the traditional territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy. I acknowledge the traditional stewards of this land. I honor the Abenaki, as well as the Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Pasamaquoddy and Penobscot peoples, and their descendants who still live here.
