Welcome!
My name is Alice Toohey and I am a death & dying companion in Portland, Maine. I support individuals, families, and communities in the following ways:
As a trained and experienced Death Doula, I help you identify the practical, emotional, and spiritual choices that reflect who you are and what you most value when facing the end of life. My role is to accompany and advocate for your choices before, during, and after death—offering support with a mutual understanding of how we’ll work together during this time.
Death & Dying Conversations invite us to integrate mortality into daily life at any stage—not just in times of crisis. Whether you're an individual, family, community group, or organization, these conversations are a way to deepen connection, clarify values, and cultivate meaning. I offer facilitated conversations, groups and consultations for those who are ready to engage intentionally with these topics.
Community-Led Funeral Support allows for care and ceremony to be led by those closest to the one who has died. I offer guidance in designing and carrying out funerals held outside of a funeral home—including support with paperwork, body care, logistics, and community coordination. I do not serve as a funeral director, I support you to take the lead in creating a farewell that aligns with your values and capacities.
As a guide for deathtending work; Alice's demeanor is both gentle and strong, clear yet open; she sets a tone for curious inquiry and encourages one to move at your own pace. I sense that Alice has been at this work for quite some time, on her own journey, of which she is transparent in subtle ways that spark one's own reflections. - Candace Peterson-Kahn
The Other Shore is created in Portland, Maine, which was settled on the traditional territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy. I acknowledge the traditional stewards of this land. I honor the Abenaki, as well as the Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Pasamaquoddy and Penobscot peoples, and their descendants who still live here.
